WHEN IS RECRUITMENT?

Fall Primary Recruitment happens every year the week before classes start. We do this in order to give PNMs the best experience possible where they get quality time with each chapter and to help acclimate them to campus. This also allows for PNMs to focus on their academics once school starts.

Fall 2017 Primary Recruitment is August 12th-August 20th.

what is a pnm?

PNM stands for Potential New Member. This is any woman who is going through the recruitment process wanting to join a Panhellenic chapter.

DO I NEED LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION?

No!

While you may hear that other SEC schools require Letters of Recommendation, the University of Kentucky does not require them for recruitment! We find that our sorority women care more about the one-on-one conversations that they have with you during recruitment functions, rather than what a letter from an alumni says about you. Our women want to know all your unique personality traits and values that make you who you are, and no letter can tell them that.

However, if you have a close family friend who has reached out and really wants to write you a recommendation, please mail them to 518 Patterson Office Tower Lexington, KY 40506 with the name of the specific chapter listed on the envelope. Our sorority houses are closed for the summer so by sending them to the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office we are able to guarantee that they reach the specific chapter.

As stated before, letters are not required or needed by any means so spend your summer relaxing and hanging out with friends, not worrying about getting Letters of Recommendation!

I'm a legacy. Does this mean i will receive a bid from my legacy chapter?

Each Potential New Member is considered on an individual basis; a legacy is no more obligated to join a particular chapter than the chapter is obligated to offer her a bid. The PNM and the chapter should be looking for compatibility, not necessarily a family connection to the group. Panhellenic has no policies regarding legacies because each chapter has its own policy, and Panhellenic has no input in individual chapter membership decisions. Because we have so many young women go through recruitment, it is not guaranteed that every legacy will join her legacy chapter.

However, we do want to make sure that your legacy chapter knows that you are coming through recruitment! Make sure that on your registration form, you indicate if you have any connections to the chapters on our campus. You should also have your mom, grandmother, or sister fill out the Legacy form for her specific chapter. The form should be available on the chapter's National websites.

If I participate in recruitment, am I obligated to join a chapter?

Many women choose to go through recruitment to meet people and make new friends. Recruitment is an opportunity for you to visit the chapters, get a glimpse of Greek life, and assess whether or not you would like to be a part of the UK Greek Community.

What does it mean when someone is released from recruitment?

Although it is a very rare situation, it it possible to be released from Recruitment. "Released from Recruitment" means a potential new member has not been asked to return to any of the chapters for the next round of the process. A Gamma Chi will notify the released woman as soon as possible and they will meet one-on-one to discuss her options moving forward. Since women released from Recruitment are still extremely important to us, the Gamma Chi will remain in contact with her throughout the fall semester and beyond. In addition, all Gamma Chis will provide their group members with other campus activities, clubs and future Recruitment opportunities.

are there options for someone who has been released?

There are still opportunities for women to join chapters after primary Recruitment is over. Some chapters are eligible to participate in a process called Continuous Open Bidding (COB). Not all chapters are eligible for COB and it is never a guarantee. If a chapter decided that they would like to accept more new members during COB, the COB events will be posted on the Panhellenic Calendar as well as the chapter's social media platforms. These events tend to be more laid back with activities such as cupcake decorating or roller skating. Panhellenic will also hold a COB event each semester where all participating chapters will be there to talk with PNMs.

WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS?

Recruitment Registration costs $150 before July 15th, $175 before August 1st and $225 after August 1st.

Each of our organizations carry financial obligations. Dues are assessed at the beginning of each semester, meaning that women will be expected to make two payments per year to their sorority. The first semester of membership tends to be the most expensive as there are often one-time initiation fees. On our campus, those costs range from $710-$1,618 with the average being $1,152 per semester. The subsequent semesters range from $640-$1,055 and the average is $894 per semester. Some of our chapters offer the opportunity to live in the sorority house. Those costs range from $3,201-$4,745 with the average being $3,904 per semester.

You can find the specific costs for each chapter in many different places. The first place to look is on each of the Chapter pages! You will also be given the information with your mailed receipt after registering, and in your Sorority Sorts booklet.

Many Panhellenic women pay for their own dues by working throughout the school year or having a summer job! To help with financial obligations, many organizations offer different payment options that may include payment plans and scholarships.

CAN I participate in RECRUITMENT IF I'M ALSO IN FAST TRACK OR AN LLP?

Yes! We work very hard to make sure that you are able to do all the different activities at UK while also participating in recruitment! You will be in a Gamma Chi group with other women who are also participating in these activities. While we try to ensure that your recruitment experience looks the same as all who are going through recruitment, we sometimes have to make scheduling adjustments. Sometimes, you will attend a split function where you spend half the function at one chapter and half the time at another chapter.

Make sure to list on your registration form that you will be in an LLP or Fast Track so that we can place you in the correct group!

what should i wear during recruitment

You should wear whatever you feel most comfortable in that expresses your individuality! There is no right or wrong outfit to wear during Recruitment. However, as each round progresses and becomes more formal, our outfit recommendations do too! If you check out our Recruitment Process page, you will see pictures of suggestions for each day. You can also find this information in the Sorority Recruitment Booklet that will be mailed to your house when you register. Here's a quick glance at outfit suggestions. Check out our Pinterest, Kentucky Panhellenic, for more ideas!

Open House: You will be provided with a Panhellenic tshirt for both of those days! We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and shorts with your tshirt since Open House round tends to be the longest day.

Philanthropy: The dress for Philanthropy round is still casual. Shorts and a top or a casual sundress work great!

Sisterhood: This round starts to get more formal so we recommend nicer skirts, tops, dresses, or pants.

Preference: This is the most formal round of Recruitment as the rounds will include Preference Ceremonies from each chapter. This day you should wear banquet style outfits- think of something you would have worn at the end of your senior year to a scholarship banquet or awards ceremony. This day is also really long so you will definitely want comfortable shoes again!

Bid Day: You will be provided with another Panhellenic shirt on this day, and its design will be announced on social media. We recommend wearing comfortable shorts or jeans with comfy shoes. You will be running around and celebrating with your new sisters so you want to be comfy!
